Learning the terms, acronyms, and technologies of your business is imperative when trying to understand how technology can help your business. In this discussion, we will examine these technologies, terms, and organizational strategies.
The role of the business analyst or systems analyst is to help develop the systems that will solve problems using the business needs or requirements gathered from employees at various levels. As an informed user, you should understand the value that these systems bring to an organization, including staying up-to-date on the latest technologies, and making informed decisions on new and improved technologies so management and the business/systems analysts can understand business needs/requirements.

Quite simply put, the main role of technology in business is to drive growth and improve operations (Datascope, 2018). There are, of course, a number of different ways this can be done. Technologies can both do what people do only better, and they can do what people just plain can’t do at all. Databases can be searched for pertinent information in a fraction of a second. We can’t retrieve information that quickly. Only if it’s stored within our brains, and even that isn’t always reliable.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a field only growing more and more every year. Long gone are the days where our t.v.s and phones were the only smart applications we owned. Now companies like PICA Manufacturing Solutions (PICA, 2020) fit everyday common household items such as your fridge with circuit boards that monitor the activities and conditions of internal hardware. System diagnostics can be run, recorded and better implemented. Malfunctions can be more quickly diagnosed and repaired.
Are you a gamer? Is your PC too slow to run today’s top games? Companies like NVidia have taken cloud computing to the next level in order to cure what ails you. By utilizing a system of remote servers you can have graphically demanding titles both stored and run for you from afar while you instead only need a to have a computer which can play a simple video rendition of it on your end (fast internet required).
This all barely scratches the service of what technology can be utilized for. There are endless ways technology can create opportunity for businesses and their customers, and more and more are discovered and developed every day.

Hi Everyone,
After reading about IBM’s Watson it’s pretty clear that technology has a place in many business industries. The reasoning to integrate technology within business is to make things easier. Watson proved that the system was able to read and store data from all of the medical journals as well as analyze a patient’s medical history against the data. By having this feature available, doctors are able to rely on Watson to quickly research potential diagnoses or utilize the potential diagnoses determined by Watson. This type of technology will ensure that doctors are efficient and accurate in serving their patient’s needs. Watson is also utilized in customer service where the software “…can quickly address customers’ questions, offer feedback to guide their purchase decisions, and troubleshoot their problems” (Closing Case IBM’s Watson, n.d.).
After looking at the glossary of terms there were a few terms that jumped out at me, the two terms are cloud computing, and knowledge management system. One company that utilizes cloud computing and knowledge management systems is the company Sodexo where I work. Sodexo utilizes these two technological terms by utilizing software known as SAP. SAP is a software that many companies utilize in managing their business, the SAP cloud platform allows users to be anywhere to make updates to their company information which will be updated instantly. Not only does SAP have a cloud platform for cloud computing, but the software also has a knowledge management system function. The knowledge management system function stores all of the necessary data that may be relevant to the company. When data becomes irrelevant the data can be exported out of the knowledge management system and saved on an external database for standard record keeping.
Have a great week.
