In order to develop good marketing objectives, we need to get back to the basics of understanding how to write a good goal. There are several renditions of the following quote, but they all provide the same message; “A goal without a due date is all but a dream.” SMART goals are designed to force you into creating a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
For example, let’s say that you want to run a marathon, which is 26.2 miles. This has been a dream of yours for quite some time. In order to make this dream a reality, you need to have some SMART goals in place. Your first goal may be to run 10 miles in the morning (specific) at a 10-minute pace (measurable and attainable) four weeks from today’s date (time bound). The goal is relevant as it is helping you reach your long-term goal of running a full marathon. Therefore, this would meet the criteria of a SMART goal.
